This weekend I was invited to play in an exclusive tournament at the MoheganSun.com poker room which is preparing for a full launch in March of 2013. There is no word yet on potential online poker legislation in Connecticut, but with a solid online poker room already in place my guess is Mohegan Sun is preparing for the inevitable, and plans to be at the forefront of Connecticut poker when it does launch.
According to the E-Mail I received, the tournament was by invite only (the site still needs a pass word to even log into) and Mohegan Sun was giving away a stay at the hotel for the winner, while the second and third place finishers would receive $75 on their Mohegan Sun rewards cards. It appears that even though the site will not be a real-money online poker room, they will award a number of prizes through tournaments at the site.
The site is launching as a play-money online poker room utilizing software from the OnGame Network, which has a familiar look and feel that seasoned online poker players will appreciate. The plans for the MoheganSun.com online poker room were first announced back in the fall of 2012, and the site is now ready for its full launch, with play money games already running at the site.
Unfortunately I was unable to participate in the tournament, but before the tournament on Saturday night I took the MoheganSun.com play-money tables for a test drive and was impressed with the amount of traffic the site already has, as well as the level of play for a play-money site. For a comparison, I tried the play-money tables at the SouthPointPoker.com online poker room a few months back (South Point is in the running to be the first legal online poker room in the US) and was dismayed by the product they had put out. Granted, it was only the play-money games, but the software was sub-par and there were numerous glitches. MoheganSun.com on the other hand ran flawlessly during my time at the tables, and the games were fast-paced with zero technical issues.
The online poker room will be a terrific compliment to the brick & mortar Mohegan Sun Poker Room, which currently boats 42 tables in its own private section at the back of the main casino. While not as large as the nearby Foxwoods I prefer the Mohegan Sun’s poker room personally due to its location, lighting, and atmosphere in general –the only drawback is that compared to Foxwoods Mohegan Sun offers fairly low-limit games.
